Announcing Lights in the Sky, a Brony Fan Fair visual novel

June 9, 2013 in Community, News, Slideshow

Hey everypony! We’ve got a treat for you. An upcoming fan-made visual novel is in the works starring the pony mascots Rising Star and Heartland. Both characters are representatives of Brony Fan Fair, an upcoming convention in Austin, TX on September 13th-15th at the Holiday Inn Austin Midtown.

title

Lights in the Sky is the story of Rising Star’s journey to find her cutie mark. As a farm filly, Rising Star tries hard to fulfill the responsibilities given to her by her older sister, Heartland. But an opportunity arises where she finds that her heart’s desire may rest outside the boundaries of the Star Fields family farm. Rising Star will be put to the test as she is forced to decide between adherence to her sister’s wishes or the yearning to follow her own dreams.

The first part of the novel will be available by the end of June 2013. Players will be able to play Rising Star’s exploration of the Manehatten Astronomical Society building, the first leg of her journey.

Lights in the Sky is a creation of Peter Jiang, Chairman for Brony Fan Fair. The visual novel was a final project for the “Writing and Narration for Video Games” spring semester class at the University of Texas at Austin taught by Sheldon Pacotti (writer on Deus Ex) and is being developed for younger audiences. Pacotti comments: “…[A]s a work of interactive fiction — from what I’ve seen — it succeeds on every level. There is conflict, exploration, a sense of adventure, and the writing always stays safely in the established My Little Pony universe.”

With the end of June a month away, there is some quite some time to wait. Get familiar with Heartland and Rising Star (as an adult) in this animation made for Brony Fan Fair entitled “Heated Competition,” which features Rising Star and Heartland as they discuss a rivalry with a certain apple-related family.

COSPLAY Guest: Holly Gloha

Brony Fan Fair is pleased to announce Austin local, Holly Gloha, as our first cosplay guest EVER! Look familiar? Holly graces our website in one of our rotating headers and in our video promo cosplaying her interpretation of Princess Celestia. She even co-hosted our cosplay contest in the same costume in 2012. Returning to BFF2013, Holly is one of our cosplay contest judges.

Holly Gloha is a cosplayer and professional “attention seeker” who has been costuming for about six years. She has created and modeled costumes from anime to video games and comics. You could even say she’s addicted to it! Over the years she has won a feature on cosplay.com (as Rarity) and deviantART.com, as well as various awards at cosplay competitions around the state of Texas. While her various accolades speak to her craftsmanship as a cosplayer, she insists that there’s still a lot of costuming construction she’s learning and loves to share her accomplishments and trials.

She often shares the tutorials and pattern she uses on her deviantART and Facebook page. Find her on deviantART as HollyGloha or like her page on Facebook as HollyGloha Cosplay!

First Community Guests Announced: Amelie Belcher & Rina-chan

May 17, 2013 in Guests, Programming, Slideshow

Announcing our first two community guests! One has been a lifelong fan of My Little Pony and the other returns from Brony Fan Fair 2012!

Amelie “Ami-Chan” Belcher

Favorite Ponies: Baby Dusty (G1) & Derpy

Amelie Belcher

Amelie “Ami-Chan” Belcher was born in Baton-Bloody-Boring-Rouge Louisiana where the combination of chemical plant fumes and river water did major damage to her fragile little mind at an early age. By all accounts, she started drawing at the age of five (when she figured out that the pencil goes on the paper and not up your nose) and didn’t stop drawing until she ran out of paper… twenty years later. Amelie taught high school art for four years, but lost interest in teaching when it cut into her quest to collect all the dragon balls and forcibly evolve her Pokemon into the Old Spice Guy. She is also the artist behind the manga “Loud Snow” and the web comic “The Real Life Adventures Of Amelie” seen currently at amiarmy.com. Amelie now travels the country selling her award winning artwork and doing one of a kind stand up drawing panels where she secretly sneaks art education into peoples minds between hilarity.

A life long lover of My Little Pony, Amelie amassed a collection of over 160 G1 ponies before they went out of production. She sold the bulk of them to pay for her college education and now regrets going to college. Simply put, she wants her ponies back. If you’re a classic MLP fan, you’ll find a friend in Amelie.

Rina-chan

Favorite Ponies: Minuette(Colgate) & DJ Pon-3(Vinyl Scratch)

Rina-chan

That’s right. Voice actress and amazing super-talent Rina-chan will return to Brony Fan Fair 2013 this September.

Rina-chan is well-known for her various voice work in the fandom with the Colgate Brushie song as well as her work as Twilight Sparkle in the PONY.MOV series.  Rina-chan also works in the voice acting industry as Kira Buckland and can be heard in video games such as Skullgirls as Bloody Marie, Heroes of Newerth as the Seductive Announcer, Castle Crashers as Medusa and Princess voices. Most recently, she can be heard as Izumo Kamiki in “Blue Exorcist” and Madoka Kyouno in “LaGrange”.

Rina-chan has over 30+ brony voice projects to her name and that doesn’t even count the 1000 different voices she’s done overall since 2004! Check out her website and tell her how awesome she is at www.rina-chan.com.

ABOUT HEY OCEAN!
One of Canada’s best up and coming bands, Hey Ocean! is a young band with a remarkable talent for blending various musical styles into a brand of infectious Pop that is uniquely their own.

Ashleigh Ball, David Beckingham and David Vertesi have created a musical repertoire that cannot be ignored – be it on radio, television or your neighbor’s iPod, Hey Ocean! will soon be everywhere. Aside from the skillful delivery of their music, what sets Hey Ocean! apart is the spirited character they bring to the stage. Three mischievous personalities combine to form a dynamic live presence that keeps concertgoers captivated and on their feet. In fact, live performance has been an integral part of what the band calls their “natural growth.” But what began as a very casual musical partnership between friends has, in less than five years, morphed into one of Canada’s most successful independent bands.

BFF 2013 Announced!

December 29, 2012 in News, Registration

Prepare for Brony Fan Fair 2013!

It’s official! Brony Fan Fair 2013 is go! The first-ever brony convention in Texas will return to the Lone Star State on September 13-15, 2013.

Take a look at that date again and you’ll realize that BFF2013 is gonna give you a little extra this year. The convention is now three days long! That’s a whole ‘nother day of extra programming to satiate your pony needs.

In addition to the extra day, the BFF staff has taken into consideration some ways to improve the convention. We will be returning to the Holiday Inn Midtown and will now have access to the entire convention floor. This allows for more flexibility when it comes to panel planning. Last year, we only had 3/4th of the Main Ballroom to work with, but we have added four additional rooms, including a lecture hall. This has nearly doubled the size of the convention space since Brony Fan Fair 2012, increasing our capacity for more people, more events and more pony! We want you to have fun and we’re working on giving you an even better pony experience than before!

The BFF staff has also planned a few new things this year, including a new gaming room, a FANimation room with 24-hour fan animations and PMV’s, and a Very Important Pony (VIP) program.

Pre-registration starts at $25 till January 25th February 15th. On Jan. 26th February 16th, the price will raise to $30 per ticket and then increase one more time before the convention, where on-site registration will be $40. But if you’re already planning to go, pre-register now and save yourself some money! Help us beat those pre-registration numbers of 300 from last year.

You helped us make BFF 2012 a memorable experience. Now let’s work on making the second year even better!

EDIT: By the time we had pre-registration ready, the January 25th deadline for a $25 has passed. We’ve changed the date to February 15th and we apologize for the trouble.
